Martial arts fans in Bali must be no strangers to competitive fighting events such as SOMA Fight Series from SOMA Fight Club or Canggu Fight Night from Bali MMA. And last Saturday, we were thrilled to bring something new to the scene with our first-ever Muay Thai competition, Backyard Fight!
Backyard Fight marked not only the first competition hosted by us, but also the first Muay Thai competition to be held in Ubud! The event brought together Muay Thai enthusiasts from all over Bali who came to enjoy the fights and have a good time. The atmosphere was electric as everyone was cheering on the fighters as they stepped into the ring.
However, the event was not just about the fights. It was also about the sense of community and support that it brings. Quoted from our Founder, Ocho, "Through this event, our mission is to promote Muay Thai by bringing it to the community in the form of a backyard competition. We were thrilled to see almost 200 participants celebrate it with us. This is solid proof that Muay Thai is designed for anyone with varied backgrounds.”
But as popular as Muay Thai has become, it hasn't yet emerged as a truly local option for spectators and especially for the fighters because the chances to compete are very limited. “We at Ubud Muay Thai recognize the importance of training and developing homegrown fighters. We aim to excel in competitions and strive to foster the next generation of Muay Thai athletes,” said Edsar, our Co-Founder who has been a champion in multiple fighting competitions (Road To Victory 2021, SOMA Fight Series 2022). “It is our duty to not only improve ourselves but to uplift the community as well”.
That is why as the first Muay Thai community in Ubud, we feel like it's our duty to set the wheels in motion and staged an event like this. We want to breed the next great champion from Ubud like Edsar and give the local fighters a platform to showcase their skills and talent. We see The Backyard Fight as a great means for fighters to get their feet wet before they go amateur.
All in all, we just wanted to say a big thank you for coming out to our first-ever Muay Thai Backyard Fight event! We put this event together specifically for the Ubudians and fighters from all around Bali, and it was so cool to see it all come together! Also a big shoutout to Simply Social Bali for the delicious foods and drinks, Lakota Moira and Yayasan Bumi Sehat Bali who’ve been helping us with the medical supplies, as well as Rumantara and Waroeng Adji who’ve been providing the prizes for the winners!
For those who missed the event, don't worry, the next Ubud Muay Thai Backyard Fight is coming soon and the opportunity to see the best Muay Thai fighters of Ubud competing at their best will be something not to be missed! So let's keep the fights coming and cheers to the next one!
